The topic I have chosen for my externally set task is 'OPENING'. I have never known or seen openings images or the photographers that take openings images. During this project I will be doing research on different photographers. I take 3 of my first experiment.
My first experiment of 'openings'
Lee Friedlander
I chose these particular photographs of Lee Friedlander because I love the way he has used nature to frame the image in the same way in which a door or window would. I think he was every imaginative the way Lee used the branches of the tree to frame the image. I found it more interesting because he had different shapes in the image at which nature forms, this made it more interesting for me to look at as I then look at the shapes which are inside the frame too. I also find it interesting the way he has created different foreground or background which differs each time. Lee also uses different seasons too and he uses the seasons of the fruit to also add a frame.

My first experiments
The images above were my first experiment for 'openings'. Because it was my first experiment for me it went well and most of them came out better then I thought. However some didn't go to plain for an example the key whole on the pavement was one that didn't go to plain and the whole in the silver bar. but there are good images such as the image of someones hand unfocused and the bin is in focus. My intention was to take images that are new like nobody would think of doing. I wanted to achieve my intention of taking new things. From the images I have taken it represents my theme 'Openings'. I could arrange them in what went well and even better if. If I had to retake the images I would do differently I would take images else where then the same place as it will be boring.
Clarence John Laughlin
|
I chose to research Clarence John Laughlin because I find his work interesting. I find is work interesting because he makes one dull image and then makes it look amazing such as in one image its a spiral going up but children's heads are going up to.Most of is images has models in them this was because when he started photographing he used different objects like for an example he used employed models, costumes, and props to create haunting abstractions. In 1948 Clarence wrote a book called "Ghosts Along the Mississippi". Clarence uses modals to mark the image by making it different such as the image of the room with a women in side with her hand on her chin, this makes it more interesting as you as the audience looking at the image wants to know Why is there a women a empty room standing there look up ?.

Second Experiments
First Final Outcome Proposal
For my final proposal outcome I will be taking opening images from different places . What I hope to make is different images that people have not taken before and come out of my comfort zone and take more images.
I took four images that was not successful and four images that was successful out of sixteen images I took a couple of weekends ago. The four images on the left : Bush, Bird House, The Bin and the Food stick where birds get their food from , these are the 'not successful images' this is because : I took them to quickly so they are not as good as they could of been if I took my time. I also did not not thing and just take, take and take which made the images not as successful then the other four. They are also all from the same part of the place I took from. However What Went Well was that they are four different images and have different features in the image. Even better if some of the images was in black and white so it is even more different and is more effective to the audience . Also they could be less of the same because each one has the same green plants in them, however I love the fact each one of the images have nature in them or of nature this is because I love nature this is because there is so much nature in the world even though this might make peoples point of views different for the image as it always have the same stuff init this is also with the emotion 'BORING' in them, on the other hand if it is different kinds of nature for example different types flowers then its some thing new. The four images on the right : The Pink Flower , The Bike Wheel , The Bench and the Bird House, you guest it these are the 'successful images' this is because: I took my time and I did not rush taking the images so they came out better then the other four , I thought before I taken the images then just take , take and take and they are different places in the place I took from. What Went Well was that they are all different with different features . Even better if there was more different objects that will be more different and that I went further then just take easy images.
This is my favourite image out of the four successful images this is because it shows one big pink flower in the centre foreground of the image opening up which looks amazing and effective to the audience. I love the colour of the flower as it is my favourite colour so it makes the image look happy it has not just got the colour pink in it also two different shades of green these two shades of green are Light green and Dark green , this is effective as it does not have the same old shade of colour and it makes the image look brighter but at the same time dark as well because of the dark shade of green. In the back ground you have a right side looking down pink flower with light green leaves pointing out also there is dark green trees right in the back ground .
This is my worst image out of the four not successful images this is because it is very boring, its life is dead and there are no bright colours to make it really interesting or bring it to life. It is very boring because all there is a bin with a whole which has rubbish through it and in the left hand corner there is mud with dead light green plants. What I mean when I said ' its life is dead' is because there are no bright colours, nature or sunlight so the image is not pretty this makes it not a great image. There are no bright objects which makes the image look dull . If I could take this image again what I would do is get more brightness in the image and get sunlight on to the silver/grey bin this would make the bin shine and make it more better then just a bin this would make the audience that look at the image feel and say wow what a good image and made one simple thing and made it so beautiful.
FINAL 7 IMAGES FROM 7TH TO 1ST
7 6 5
1ST
Each image is all the same shape (square). All of the images are at the same direction.they are all in colour not in black and white because i feel like it is better in colour then black and white .I put all the image in a group as they are in my theme of nature , i was inspirited by one of my favourite photographers Lee Friedlander. I put them in to a group as they looked better then individually as it don't look interesting and if they where on they one it would look lonely in a way that it would be dull

These images are when in my own time went to five arches while walking my dog with my dad I took some images of nature I was inspired my Lee Friedlander as he took images of opening nature however one difference between my and his he took them of different seasons but mostly winter.
I like this images as the represent my and my personality as I love nature and see different flowers growing. My images don't just represent openings but it also as the Rule Of Third and extra . |
2nd final piece
When i did my experiment, I picked out three and but them in a group. They where all in colour but they look better in black and white . What went well was I did not even think to do them and make them look well together and they look even better in black and white. If i ever went back and took them again i would not change anything.

Final evaluation
At the begging of this project we had a sheet with 7 different projects with an definition for each project the 7 are : 1. Openings, 2. Disguise, 3. Futurism, 4.Edges ,5. Street Photography , 6. Texture and 7. Fragment. out of them seven I read and reread each project and Openings was the one that stranded out for me personally. I was going to chose Edges but I felt that it was to easy and I would personally get bored and it would not interest me as the Openings did. When I looked and researched more into Openings I looked at photographers to get a more in depth look and understanding before and until I do my first experiment . When I researched the topic openings I went out and took three images for my self to see how it turned out so it was not my first experiment as I only took three images. In the next lesson I looked at more photographers and only two court my eye the most, they were Lee Friedlander and Clarence John Laughlin, I like the photographer Lee Friedlander because he did beautiful and wonderful images of nature that was also an opening. I chose Clarence John Laughlin because she took images of reality but with openings inside the image. From looking at the theses two photographers it inspired me to take images like theirs so I took nature images in my own time at 5 arches park which Lee inspired me to do then Clarence made me think I could take images of every thing people see or use.
When I take images I do feel nervous but I always feel more excited because I forget what I'm nervous about and think of good ideas and sometimes they can be my creation like the one in my first images the one were I told Blake to put her fingers into a box shape and then I focused on to the bin in the background and blurring the foreground of my image I also looked at what's around me like nature that we see everyday but never noticed.
When I got into and more confident in my images I thought of more things and took more images in my own time such as when I went on holiday to cumber sands I took arrange of different images then but my best seven into my lest favourite to my favourite of my favourite group and the other experiment images.
Making an final piece was easy for me personally but hard at times not going to lie. It was easy as I looked at display strategies on Pinterest on Tallis art I got two good ways to present my images .
